The Nowata High school prom is in the books. We had a great turnout--about 150 kids. Everything went well. It rained all day but cleared to be able to hold the Grand March outside. Then after the Grand March and we were all inside, the sky opened up again and it poured.

In case you're wondering, the Grand March is where all the students parade in front of the parents while each couple is announced. This allows all the parents to see what their child and everyone else is wearing. In the past they've held the Grand March down the steps of an old hotel. The hotel is now so run down it's not feasible. Sometimes it's in the gym but that is hot and crowded. Four years ago, I started the current tradition of having valet parking, then the couples are announced as they arrive--kind of like Oscar night. But what you have to understand is this Grand March thing is a huge deal in this town. There are no other schools in the area that do a Grand March. The whole town attends, and I've had parents tell me this is the biggest night of their child's life. I bite my tongue from saying, "How sad!" No one likes having the prom in the HS gym but there's no other place for the Grand March so the gym is the place, and we spend a week trying to make it look NOT like a gym. I seriously think my tires would be slashed if I tried to eliminate the Grand March. Fortunately I don't have to worry about that issue any more. This will officially be my last prom here. Of course my resume indicates I'm willing to sponsor prom at a new school, so who knows maybe my prom organizing days aren't over.

inola had their prom at the jenks aquarium and they did that march thing as the "valet" took their cars. i think its a fun idea! my SIL griped though cuz she didn't know they were doing it...her senior didn't invite her to be there and then she heard later by her son's escort that all the parents were there, lined up taking pics as the couples were announced and walked down the red carpet into the prom.

Great job. That looks awesome. I am very impressed with your prom decorating skills.
I feel like they had something like the grand march in West Yellowstone because I have a vague memory of being at the school prom once but of course I shouldn't have been because I was a little kid.
I think every highschool should have a Grand March. I would show up for it every year. I would be the Grand March stalker.

The local access TV guy videos the Grand March and then it's shown repeatedly on TV.
